It appears that Michael Ignatieff is the man to beat in the upcoming Liberal leadership race. The amount of money he’s raised puts him far ahead of most other candidates; the only other guy who comes close is former Ontario Premier Robert Rae.
Iggy originally came to fame as an intellectual figure. He was known for his unique mix of realism and humanitarianism in matters of foreign policy, stances which led him to support the 2003 Iraq war and encourage an end to anti-Americanism in Canada, among other controversial causes.
But controversial causes do not play well in Canada, especially not in the Liberal Party, which champions a defense of the status-quo above all else. In order to win his party’s nomination Mr. Ignatieff is now continually downplaying, or outright denying almost all of his previous positions on everything. In fact, these days it seems his preferred strategy is to just shut up altogether. Check out my guide to all the candidates
